JAMB candidates in fisticuffs with officials, over delay in print-out

THERE was pandemonium at the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Makurdi, Benue State capital, on Monday, when prospective candidates for this coming Saturday examination threw caution to the wind and engaged officials of the board in a fisticuff.
About 50 of them were, however, arrested at the scene of the incident by policemen.
An eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune that trouble started after JAMB officials, who had earlier advised the candidates to come to their office and access their examination print-out for this Saturday’s Computer-Based Test, CBT, were sent home and advised to return on Tuesday.
The source further said that in fury, the candidates refused to leave and resorted to throwing stones at the JAMB officials as well as pulled down the security post of the office.
Following the unruly behavior, JAMB officials wasted no time in inviting the Police, who came over and threw teargas canisters at the candidates to disperse them.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Hyacinth Dagala, said the over 300 candidates were asked by JAMB officials to wait for just one hour for the print-outs to be ready but they protested by throwing stones and making bonfire around the examination board office.
He also said that police officers were later deployed to the office and dispersed the candidates with teargas canisters, adding that over 50 of them have been arrested.
