10 things you didn’t know about Nigeria’s President-elect

Muhammadu Buhari has emerged as Nigeria’s President-elect after keenly contested elections on March 28 and 29.

Buhari beat incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan with about 2 million votes to emerge victorious.
Here are 10 things you should know about Nigeria’s incoming President.
  1. He is the 23rd child of his father.
  2. He divorced his first wife, Safinatu in 1988 after 17 years of marriage.
  3. He married his second wife, Aisha in 1989.
  4. He fathered 10 children, 8 of whom are still alive.
  5. His first daughter, Zulaihat Junaid, died from sickle cell anaemia in 2012, two days after having a baby at a hospital in Kaduna.
  6. His ex-wife, Safinatu died from complications of diabetes in 2006.
  7. He reared cattle as a young boy.
  8. He knew former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, was going to overthrow his government.
  9. He was in prison when his mother died in 1988 but he wasn’t allowed to attend her funeral.
  10. He was one of the two private African individuals to be invited to US President, Barack Obama’s inauguration.
